Data Governance Capability

Introduction

Squadron Energy engaged Frazer Walker to support the accelerated development and rollout of its Data Governance capability. The strategic objective of this initial phase was to identify and mitigate privacy risks associated with personal and sensitive data, ensuring governance processes are both robust and fit for purpose.

The Challenge

As Australia’s leading renewable energy company, Squadron Energy has experienced rapid growth, accompanied by an expanding workforce and deployment of new systems. This growth significantly increased the risk of data misuse and privacy breaches. Being a relatively new company focussed on growth, Data Governance had not been a priority, but the evolving risk landscape made it critical to establish a structured approach.

The challenge was to design a minimum viable Data Governance framework and a roadmap tailored to Squadron Energy’s specific needs while aligning with best-practice principles. A fixed timeline added complexity, compounded by limited availability of key personnel who were heavily engaged in business-as-usual activities.

Our Work

Frazer Walker collaborated closely with Squadron Energy to lay the foundation for effective Data Governance. Key priorities included:

  • Refinement of governance policies and standards including the data business glossary
  • Creation of eight training modules and quick reference guides
  • Development of the Data Asset Catalogue across three critical departments
  • Identification of data risks and implementation of controls
  • Establishment of processes and procedures to support compliance and risk management

The Outcome

Key Data Governance services were delivered on time to budget as required by Squadron. These foundational elements provide a strong starting point for Squadron Energy’s Data Governance journey. As Squadron Energy continues to mature its Data Governance capability, fostering a culture that recognises data as a strategic asset—not just a compliance requirement—remains essential. This approach will help minimise risk, ensure regulatory compliance, and unlock the value of data for business growth.
